A panoramic sunroof is a large glass roof panel — often extending over the rear seats — that floods the cabin with light and gives passengers a view of the sky and city skyline. Some open, others are fixed. Luxury cars add power sunshades, infrared-reflective glass to reduce heat, and increasingly smart glass that can switch from clear to dark electronically — as in Mercedes’ Magic Sky Control and the Cadillac Celestiq’s four-zone roof.

Modern glass roofs are made of laminated or tempered safety glass and are designed as part of the car’s structure. Vehicles with panoramic roofs must pass the same roof-strength and crash requirements as those with metal roofs.
