Asbury Park, on the Jersey Shore about 55 miles from Manhattan — roughly an hour and a quarter by car — has reinvented itself as one of the Shore’s most vibrant towns. Its boardwalk is anchored by the landmark Convention Hall and Paramount Theatre, its music scene centers on the legendary Stone Pony, where Bruce Springsteen and many others performed, and its restaurants and bars draw crowds all year. Music history

Asbury Park is central to Jersey Shore rock. Springsteen’s 1973 debut album was titled Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., and the Stone Pony, opened in 1974, remains a famous venue. Summer festivals and concerts fill the calendar.

The boardwalk

The boardwalk links the grand Convention Hall complex with the old Casino building and the carousel house, with restaurants, bars and shops along the way.

Ocean Grove

Founded as a Methodist camp meeting in 1869, Ocean Grove is known for its Victorian cottages, tent colony and the Great Auditorium, with its historic organ.
