Most visitors reach the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island by ferry from Manhattan’s Battery Park, but ferries also depart from Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. For many visitors — especially families driving from New Jersey or staying on the New Jersey waterfront — this can be easier, with shorter lines and parking nearby. The official ferries make a loop between the park, Liberty Island and Ellis Island, so you can visit both. Tickets for the pedestal and crown should be booked well in advance.

Why start from New Jersey

  • Often shorter lines than Battery Park in peak season.
  • Parking at Liberty State Park.
  • Views: the park has some of the best views of the statue and Lower Manhattan.
  • Historic terminal: the restored Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, where many immigrants who passed through Ellis Island boarded trains west.

Ellis Island

The Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration tells the story of the millions who entered the U.S. through the island from 1892 to 1954. Much of the island lies within New Jersey’s jurisdiction.
